BENEATH THE BLUE SUBURBAN SKIES | Conclusion |
|   |
|
Though suburbanization has taken place on a mass scale, Hollywood continues to portray suburbia as a haven for the wealthy. The film industry has been slow to respond to such changes as the decline of inner-ring suburbs, the changing racial and ethnic composition of the suburban population, and the relocation of economic enterprise to suburban areas. While the disparity between standards of living in central cities and suburbs persists, the opulence of suburban life as depicted in movies does not reflect the experience of the average suburban dweller. A substantial part of the movie-going audience is now composed of suburbanites. Movie stereotypes of suburban life will persist as long as the film industry perceives that this audience wants to see itself in this light.
