Review
Most of the tracks on this comp are simple riff-heavy garage punk, some with jangly guitar but most rely on a healthy dose of fuzz. The earliest of the tracks on Garage Punk Unknowns Vol. 2 is from June of 1965, while the latest was from mid-1967. While many of these recordings are amateurish, most of them are fun to listen to and there aren't too many klinkers in the bunch. Some of the standout tracks on Garage Punk Unknowns Vol. 2, including the Rolling Ramsaxes' "You've Hurt Me So" and the King Beezz's "Found and Lost", are unique to this compilation. As always with Crypt releases, the compilers have tracked down members of many of the bands included on the comp and the track info is fun to read. The sound is good and the scratchiness of some of the 45s only adds to their charm. One puzzling thing about the booklet is that none of the bands pictured has a track on this comp, including the cover image. I'm not complaining—I suppose it's another way of giving an obscure garage band some recognition. The folks at Crypt are clearly fans and their enthusiasm makes for very enjoyable comps.
